  7.     Singing in public can make many people nervous -- including
  8. the otherwise mettlesome Meryl Streep. She belts out a country
  9. tune in the fall film Postcards from the Edge, based on Carrie
  10. Fisher's novel about a drug-plagued actress who, among other
  11. things, sings in a Western. "I was beside myself with fear,"
  12. says Streep. "My knees were going a mile a minute and my upper
  13. lip was uncontrollable." The Oscar winner repeated the song for
  14. three full days until she and director Mike Nichols were
  15. satisfied. Afterward she treated the L.A. crew and cast to an
  16. off-the-cuff concert.
